It shows two submarines in port in Guam. One, which is moored on the western pier near the submarine tender USS Emory S. Land<\/em> (AS-39), appears to be undergoing some maintenance. The white tarp-like object on its bow is not an uncommon sight for submarines in port. While it is tough to tell, compared to the other submarine moored direct across the harbor to the east, its beam looks smaller and it does not appear to have <\/font>a pumpjet propulsion system.<\/font><\/a> These factors, and its general shape, indicate that this is most likely an improved Los Angeles<\/em> class (688i) boat. The Seawolf<\/em> class, with its 40-foot beam, is wider than America\u2019s other two fast-attack submarines \u2014 the Los Angeles<\/em> class being 34 feet wide and the Virginia<\/em> class being 36 feet wide. Also, this submarine features a pumpjet instead of a propeller. The Virginia<\/em> class is also equipped with a pumpjet.  <\/font><\/p>\n

The Navy had announced<\/a> on Oct. 21 that he would be making a tour of the Indo-Pacific region, with stops in Guam, as well as Hawaii, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Papua New Guinea. The ostensible goals of the secretary\u2019s travel in the region are \u201cto discuss the importance of international defense partnerships, and reinforce the United States\u2019 commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region\u201d and to visit shore and afloat commands to better understand quality of life, and vital mission sets unique to the area of operation.\u201d Del Toro\u2019s visit to Guam is not surprising in the slightest given the island\u2019s immensely strategic position<\/a> in the Western Pacific. It makes good sense that that the secretary would want to get a firsthand look and the latest update about the status of Connecticut<\/em>, which is one of the Navy\u2019s most prized assets<\/a>, while he was there. <\/i><\/font><\/p>\n
